FRAGMENTS
The art of Cristina Cherchi, extremely modern, in repetition intentional, has numerous reading keys, equally valid. The artist is, in a certain sense, the mirror of the society in which she lives and not a single social system in history has had for us the complexity of what we live. So is impossible to find only a point of view or an univocal system of values at the same time and the deciphering of the reality of the things becomes difficult. Cristina Cherchi, with her restless sensibility, gets the fragments of modernity and gives back in form of repetitive symbols, of repetitive and obsessive images, like a mantra. Cristina Cherchi duplicates moments of reality to understand all processes, the dark sense of a world that escapes us. From this borns the refined work of Cristina on the photography that, by means for excellence, fated to reproduce, to copy, becomes the means by which the current becomes decomposed, analysed in its components. More essentials, namely those relating at the domains of unconscious and of exigences more atavics. Where it might otherwise arise distressing images that haunt us with their disturbing suggestions? The empty eye sockets that hold us back to the darkest sides of our being, is obscure because primitive and irrational. These symbols become almost sacred totems in their distance and incomprehensibility, repeated as idols, almost like a prayer, a prayer to understand. It is clear the link with the transcendent, the value that could be termed religious works by the artist in this search for an ultimate sense of things, something that lies beyond the material appearances beyond this, this middle unknowable and unreachable is what tends each make artistic, is every human experience, and it is their validity.

L’arte di Cristina Cherchi, estremamente moderna nella ripetività intenzionale, ha numerose chiavi di lettura, tutte egualmente valide. D’altra parte, un artista è, in un certo senso, lo specchio della società in cui vive, e nessun altro sistema sociale nella storia ha avuto la complessità di quello in cui troviamo a vivere. Così come è impossibile per noi rintracciare un unico punto di vista o un univoco sistema di valori al tempo stesso e a volte la stessa decifrazione della realtà delle cose diventa difficile. Cristina Cherchi, con la sua inquieta sensibilità, coglie la frammentazione della modernità e ce la rimanda sotto forma di segni, di particolare iterati, di immagini ripetute ossessivamente come mantra. L’artista coglie dei momenti di realtà e li duplica per cercare di carpirne l’intero meccanismo, il senso oscuro di un mondo che ci sfugge. Da questo nasce il raffinato lavoro di Cherchi sulla fotografia, che, da mezzo per eccellenza destinato a riprodurre, a copiare, diventa invece il mezzo attraverso il quale l’esistente viene scomposto e analizzato nelle sue componenti più essenziali, cioè quelle attinenti alle sfere dell’inconscio e dei bisogni più ancestrali. Da dove altrimenti potrebbero nascere le immagini angoscianti della Cherchi, che ci perseguitano con i loro inquietanti suggerimenti?Le orbite vuote che ci fissano ci riportano ai lati più oscuri e incomprensibili del nostro essere, perché primitivi e irrazionali. Ecco che questi simboli diventano quasi dei totem, nella loro sacrale distanza e incomprensibilità, ripetute come idoli, quasi come una preghiera, un’implorazione a comprendere, a capire. E’ evidente il legame con il trascendente, la valenza che potremmo definire religiosa delle opere della Cherchi in questa ricerca di un senso ultimo delle cose, di un qualcosa che sta al di là delle apparenze materiali. Questo al di là, questa meta inconoscibile e irraggiungibile, è ciò a cui tende ogni fare artistico, è ogni esperienza umana, e in essa sta la loro validità più profonda.
